The National Book Award finalists are out, and I’ve actually read one of them! Usually I end up reading books after they have earned some award (like last year’s nominees Only Revolutions and The Zero), but in this case, I was lucky enough to have my cousin Bill recommend Then We Came To The End by Joshua Ferris. He said they mentioned Naperville in there, and it was a good office drone book. I ended up enjoying it to the point of 4.5 stars out of 5, and I think it’s cool that it’s been nominated.
Shockingly to me, I have Tree of Smoke by Denis Johnson on my list already, and it’s also been nominated. On a side note, I’m mildly pissed that Oprah picked Love in the Time of Cholera as her latest book of the month. It’s also on my list, but I’m moving it down in priority because reading an Oprah selection makes me feel cheap somehow.
