Children of God

Children of God (Ballantine Reader's Circle) Children of God by Mary Doria Russell
My review
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
My first review where I review both the original and its sequel. This was a very interesting book. Mary Doria Russell forces you to rethink almost everything you thought you knew from the first book, and creates new heroes and villains. Once again, she brings out your emotions when things happen to the characters, and sometimes you just ache for them. It took me longer than usual to read this book because at times, I had to put it down and separate myself from their world and their pain for a while.
Once again, I ended up just short of giving the book five stars. It ends on a much more positive note than the previous book, but it’s a long row to hoe. It ended just a bit too hokey for me, but otherwise it was a very good book.
Case Histories came in at the library while I was finishing this one up, so that’s up next.

  1. When trying to describe both books to friends, I used the simple phrase “Jesuits in space” 😉

I enjoyed both books but you are right, the second one had to be put down occasionally. I think that’s a good sign for a book that it sucks you in like that. I also like the way the heroes and villians were redefined from the first to the second. Change of perspective.
