Today’s sign of the apocalypse

January 31, 2003 · Posted in Sports · Comment

Today's sign that the apocalypse is upon us: Comiskey Park is being renamed "U.S. Cellular Field." It was bad enough that they fell prey to the "build a new stadium and the will come" mantra, tearing down a stadium which, while it wasn't the greatest in the world, had been around since 1910. Now they sell out to the highest bidder. Is there any doubt that US Cellular made this deal to get their name up there in time for next year's All-Star Game? I think not.

Thoughts on the State

January 29, 2003 · Posted in Washington · Comment

Like I mentioned before, I didn't actually watch the State of the Union address, since I can't stand the constant phony applause. Instead, I read about it this morning in the paper, which is good enough for me.

Dinner for Five

I had heard about this show before, and finally realized, "Hey, I get the Independent Film Channel on DirecTV! I loved Jon Favreau in Swingers and in a smaller role in PCU (he was Gutter, the guy who fell asleep and got George Clinton to play their party).

The Daily Enron

A quick recommendation for some interesting reading. I'll try to do this every so often, as I remember web sites that I find note-worthy. The Daily Enron is a site that used to be devoted to tracking the status of the Enron investigation. They stopped for a little while, but now they are back with various criticisms of the Bush administration, and the always amusing feedback they receive from their readers. Enjoy.

Boy, I really did think I would be updating this a lot more often than I have been. Of course, I was sick all weekend long, and just really busy lately. So, what else has been going on?

Curling

A lot of you may have seen curling on MSNBC (aka Must Show Nothing But Curling) during the Olympics last year. There was a huge surge of interest during that time, and even I caught the bug. I found out that not too far away, there is the Potomac Curling Club. Update, see below for more

Bush’s Controversies

January 14, 2003 · Posted in Washington · Comment

Today on NPR's The Diane Rehm Show, they discussed President Bush's controversial renominations of previously rejected judicial candidates, including Charles Pickering and Priscilla Owen. Why? Who knows. The President apparently believes he has some sort of "mandate" from the people, since the Republicans took back the Senate in November. But why waste your political capital on this guy? Regardless of whether he is guilty of racial insensitivity or not, he is bound to run into nasty confirmation hearings.

We have partial season tickets to the Washington Capitals hockey games. Like most Washingtonians, we're not from the area, so really, it gives us a way to see two Islanders games and one Red Wings game.

Home Depot love

January 11, 2003 · Posted in Personal · Comment

Gotta love trips to Home Depot. We went today to start accumulating the stuff we need to redo our basement. Managed to fit 5 boxes of ceiling tiles in the trunk, and 9 packages of styrofoam insulation. Gotta love the large trunk of the Dodge Intrepid as well. :-) Unfortunately, this also means I'll have to start work on the basement soon...
